Measurement technology
What is measurement technology and when is it used?
Measurement technology deals with devices and procedures for measuring physical quantities. Measurement technology is used for performance evaluations, operational monitoring, checking limit values, research and development. This includes parameters such as electrical current, voltage, resistances or frequencies. With measurement technology, you can determine quantities such as force, pressure and sound just as precisely as the temperature of elements and environments.
What characterises a measuring device?
In measurement technology, the values are usually displayed on an analogue or digital scale or numerical display. Measuring devices that are used to test other measuring technology instruments are referred to as test equipment. Modern electronic measuring technology can display and store values or output them as a signal.
Electronic measurement technology always has a minimal measurement error. This measurement error should always be taken into account when analysing measured values. To minimise these measurement errors as far as possible, the measuring devices must be calibrated and adjusted.
How does measurement technology work?
Measurement technology uses mechanical, optical or electronic sensors to measure the value to be tested, either absolutely or against a reference value (target value).
In contrast to test devices, pure measuring devices such as environmental measuring devices or multimeters display values that are not interpreted but require an expert judgement. Test devices, on the other hand, sometimes emit visual or acoustic signals when certain measuring ranges are reached or exceeded.
What measuring devices are available in measurement technology?
There are suitable measuring devices and measuring equipment in different accuracy ranges for every measurement technology. In our SFS eShop you will find measuring technology for all areas of application.
Measuring tape and rolling metre
The tape mesure is often used by craftsmen or DIY enthusiasts. The tape measure is used to measure short distances with mm accuracy and longer lengths from 10 m to 100 m with cm accuracy.
Calipers and callipers
The caliper gauge is a measuring device used to measure dimensions in the tenths of a millimetre range. Due to its design, this measuring device is very suitable for measuring diameters, such as when determining the size of screws. Additional pointed measuring beaks enable the exact determination of internal dimensions or drill holes.
Micrometer
Micrometers are used for fine measurements in the hundredths of a millimetre range. To enable such precise measurements, two hardened measuring surfaces are screwed together via a thread with a very small pitch.
Scales / calipers
A ruler can be used to measure distances. This measuring tool is also used for drawing straight lines.
Calipers can be used to measure external, internal and depth dimensions to the nearest micrometre. Calipers are available with an analogue or digital display. The digital display makes it easier to read the values on the measuring device.
Height gauges
Height gauges can be used to measure the height of objects. The measuring device is also used to mark an area of an object to be worked on.
Gauges
A gauge is used to compare the shape or a specific dimension of an object with the shape and mass specified by the gauge
Angle measuring devices
Angle measuring devices enable high-precision angle measurements in the range of a few angular seconds. With different designs, these measuring devices offer an optimum measurement for every application.
Spirit levels
A spirit level is a measuring instrument used to check the alignment of an object. The measuring device can check the horizontal and vertical of an object. The liquid with an air bubble (spirit level) makes it possible to read whether the object is levelled.
Dial gauges
A dial gauge can be used to measure lengths or differences in length. The dial gauge is a mechanical measuring device. The display is shown via a rack and gear wheels. The measured value can be read off using the precision pointer.
he dial gauge is often used for comparative, flatness or concentricity measurements.
Lasers and levelling devices
Lasers and levelling devices can be used to measure the height difference of a terrain with a telescopic sigth.
The levelling device consists of a superstructure and substructure. The upper structure comprises the optical device with the telescopic sight. The base consists of a base plate and three foot screws. The upper structure is levelled horizontally with the aid of the foot screws.
We also offer accessories for measuring technology
You will find a comprehensive range of accessories for measuring technology in our eShop.
- You can mark out your measuring range with jalons and sights.
- Lanyards and wall cords can be tensioned to mark a straight line (e.g. for marking a property boundary).
- The measured values can be printed directly using an output device for measuring equipment
- Data transmission can be connected to a measuring device. This allows the measured data to be sent directly to the computer.
What to consider when buying measuring equipment?
Which measuring device is best suited to your application depends on a number of factors:
Type
Handheld device or stand-alone? This is a question of the operating environment. If you carry out mobile measurements, for example because you are often out and about visiting customers, mobile handheld devices are the right choice. However, if the measuring device remains in a fixed laboratory or workshop environment, stationary measuring devices are more suitable, especially as they often offer a wider range of functions.
Measuring ranges
Measurement technology is only as good as it is used correctly. The measuring ranges of the devices must be within the range in which they are used. Also pay attention to the specified accuracy of the measurement technology used.
Accessories
Before buying, consider whether you need additional accessories such as a data logger to use the measuring device or to analyse and transfer the data. This is usually not the case with stand-alone devices.
