Screw-in nut

Screw-in nuts are cylindrical and have a self-tapping external thread that drills into the wood and an internal thread for fitting metric screws. In furniture construction, these nuts are used in practically every application. As screw-in nuts do not have a point, the wood must be pre-drilled to insert the screw-in nut.

When is a screw-in nut used?

An ordinary wood screw can tear out quickly in soft wood if the tensile load is too high. Screw-in nuts offer the ideal solution for this. Thanks to the external thread, the screw-in nuts are much more resistant to tearing.

How is a screw-in nut fitted?

A drill hole is required in the application in order to fit screw-in nuts. When drilling the hole, it is important to ensure that the hole is as large as the core dimension of the nut. The core dimension is determined with a caliper gauge by measuring the outer part of the screw-in nut without the thread. The screw-in nut can then be screwed into the drilled hole. When screwing in the nut, it is necessary that it is screwed in at right angles to the component. The nuts have two small recesses in the upper part for this purpose. The nut can then be fitted or removed using a slotted screwdriver. However, it is difficult to screw them in precisely vertically with a slotted screwdriver.

The following alternative is therefore available for assembly:

  1. Use a screw with a metric thread of the same size as the internal thread of the screw-in nut
  2. Screw a suitable e.g. hexagon nut onto the thread of the screw
  3. The screw can now be screwed into the screw-in nut
  4. Then turn the nut on the screw downwards and tighten it slightly (lock).
  5. Now turn the screw-in nut into the drilled hole by turning the screw. For orientation, a rectangular object can be placed next to the prepared construction so that the perpendicularity can be checked when screwing in.
  6. To remove the screw, loosen the hexagon nut and unscrew the screw.
