Socket head screws

What are cheese head screws and where are they used?

Socket head cap screws are a special type of screw characterized by their cylindrical screw head. This head usually has a flat surface and can have different types of drive, such as hexagon socket (also known as Allen key), hexagon socket, Torx® or cross recess. The shank of the cap screw is usually fully or partially threaded.
The advantage of the cylindrical head is that it has a larger contact surface with the washer or the surface of the workpiece when tightening the screw. This enables better force distribution and can reduce the risk of damage or deformation of the material.

What types of cheese head screws are there?

Cylindrical screws come in various designs, differing in their specific properties and applications. Here are some of the most common types of cylindrical screws:
Hexagon socket cylindrical screws (Allen screws)
These screws have a cylindrical head with a hexagon socket drive. They are widely used and particularly suitable for applications requiring a flush or recessed installation. They offer high strength and are available in various materials.

Torx® cylindrical screws
Torx® screws, also known as internal six-lobe screws, have a cylindrical head with a star-shaped drive (Torx®). This drive provides better power transmission and reduces the risk of slipping when tightening the screw. Torx® cylindrical screws are particularly popular in the electronics and automotive industries.

Phillips cylindrical screws
These screws have a cylindrical head with a cross recess drive (Phillips or its evolution Pozidriv). They are easy to use and widely used in many household applications as well as in furniture construction.

Slotted cylindrical screws
Cylindrical screws with a simple slotted drive are less common than other types but are still used in certain applications where a simple tool is sufficient.

This variety of cylindrical screws allows you to select the right screw for each application, ensuring optimal connection and performance.

Are there accessories for cylinder screws?

Yes, there are different types of accessories for cylindrical screws that enhance their application and effectiveness. Here are some common accessories:

Washers
Washers are used to evenly distribute the screw’s load on the surface of the workpiece. They help protect the material from damage and provide a more stable connection.

Spring washers
Spring washers, also known as locking washers, prevent the accidental loosening of screws due to vibrations or movement. They provide additional security in applications where high loads or vibrations occur.

Nuts
Nuts are commonly used together with cylindrical screws, especially when the screw passes through the workpiece. They provide additional fastening and secure the screw in place.

Thread inserts
Thread inserts, such as Helicoils, are used in soft materials to create a stronger and more durable thread. They are especially useful in applications where the base material is not strong enough to hold a thread.

Adhesives and thread lockers
Thread lockers, such as screw adhesives (e.g., Loctite), are used to secure screws against loosening due to vibrations. They provide additional grip and prevent unintentional loosening.

Caps and covers
Protective caps and covers can be placed on the heads of cylindrical screws to shield them from corrosion, dirt, and damage. They can also be used for aesthetic reasons.

These accessories expand the range of applications for cylindrical screws and help optimize their functionality and durability in various uses.

What should I bear in mind when using cheese head screws?

When using cylindrical screws, it is important to consider several key aspects to ensure a secure and effective fastening:

  • Material of the workpiece: Take into account the material into which the screw is being inserted. Different materials require different types of screws. For example, some screws are better suited for soft materials such as plastic or wood, while others should be used for metal.
  • Tightening torque: Use the recommended tightening torque for the specific cylindrical screw and application. Too little torque may result in an insecure connection, while excessive torque can damage the screw or workpiece.
  • Combination with suitable nuts and washers: Use appropriate nuts and washers to distribute the load evenly and secure the connection. Washers help protect the workpiece from damage and provide a more stable connection.
  • Correct length and diameter: Select the appropriate screw length and diameter to ensure a strong and secure connection. Screws that are too short may not provide sufficient grip, while excessively long screws can damage the workpiece or protrude.
  • Use of locking mechanisms: For applications with high vibration or load, locking mechanisms such as thread-locking adhesives or spring washers should be used to prevent loosening.
  • Surface finish: Pay attention to the surface finish of both the screw and the workpiece. For applications requiring high corrosion resistance, screws made of stainless steel or with special coatings should be used.
  • Cleanliness and condition of the screw connection: Ensure that screws and fastening components are clean and free of contaminants to achieve optimal fastening. Damaged or worn screws should not be reused.
  • Assembly tools: Use appropriate tools for assembling the screws. For example, hex socket screws require the proper Allen key, while Torx® screws need the corresponding Torx® tool.
  • Temperature conditions: Consider the temperature conditions of the application. In extreme temperature environments, special screw materials may be required to withstand the conditions.
  • Safety aspects: Ensure that all safety regulations and guidelines are followed, especially in critical applications such as mechanical engineering or the automotive industry.
By following these guidelines, cylindrical screws can be used optimally, ensuring reliable and long-lasting connections.
