Stainless steel is characterized by a proportion of more than 10.5% chromium and a maximum of 1.2% carbon[10][11], which must be dissolved in the austenitic or ferritic solid solution. This high chromium content creates a protective and dense passive layer of chromium oxide on the material surface.
